In the southern end… Good week of fishing. The resorts are working to stay on the walleyes and walleyes and the fish, as a rule, are getting deeper as the winter wears on. Good activity last week in 30-34 feet of water.
Most anglers report having to sort through a number of smaller fish to find keeper with some bigger slot or trophy in the mix. Jigging with a small or medium tipped spoon with a piece of fish on your jigging line. On your second line, a deadstick with a bighead, rainbow, sucker, or vivid emerald shiner has been effective.
Some effective colors this week have been pink, bright red, yellow and gold.
A number of good sized eels (botta) have been caught this year. Most anglers fishing for walleyes that target the bottom will catch the puch while swimming. Usually a minnow on a jigging spoon or a live minnow on a leg stick will entice them to eat. Delicious table dish.
Ice conditions are generally very good with larger trucks and fish houses being allowed on many ice roads. Weight limits are potentially different on each ice road. Check Facebook pages or call resorts/facilities for current information.
As happens most years as the ice thickens, some cracks have appeared in various places. It is important to work across a resort/facility as they monitor conditions, change roads and use ice bridges as needed.
Remember to keep it clean and remove all trash and debris from the ice. have a plan
In the Rainy River… A mixed bag of walleye and river salts with the morning and evening bite is best. Use a jig and a fish in one hole, a stick with a fish right at the bottom of the second hole.
Ice conditions vary on the river as there is current, work through a complex or equipment for safety.
Up in the NW angle… A great week of ice fishing with a good number of walleyes caught. The ice road from Angle Inlet in Young’s Bay to the island resorts is open and ice fishing is underway.
In addition to walleyes making up the majority of the catch, jumbo perch, saugers, eelpout and some large pike also appear.
Driving across Canada to Angle no longer requires COVID vaccinations or use of the ArriveCan app.
For those looking to access the Angle by bypassing customs, snowmobiling across the lake on the marked trails, using the Lake of the Woods passenger (bomber) service, or flying through Lake Country Air are good options
As border waters, fish houses can be on ice until March 31. The loin / salt season is open until April 14, the pike season never closes. At www.LakeoftheWoodsMN.com/Lodging you will find a complete list of lodging, fish house rentals and fish house rentals for sleeping.
