IBSP Piping Plover Final Update

The following is from NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife Endangered and Nongame Species Program biologist Christina Davis:

Given the success at the site this year, it is with a great deal of pleasure that I bring you the last 2017 Island Beach State Park Piping Plover nesting update! Young "Stirling" has continued to stretch his wings this past week and has been observed making short flights. "Pete", the adult male, has remained on site with Stirling but they have been separated by large distances at times, which is normal for the twosome at this point. Everything right on schedule!

On Sunday, he was 35 days old and we hope that he will go on to lead a long and prosperous life (maybe he'll even come back to Island Beach to nest one day). By this (Monday) morning by 8 am, vehicle access will be reopened at the south end of the park.

A huge thank you to the Island Beach State Park staff and police, the volunteers who helped us monitor the brood, the visitors we met on site who enjoyed learning about plovers and the folks who showed patience during the vehicle closure. We truly appreciate the efforts of all!

Godspeed, Stirling!
