2018 Forest Stewardship Activities

The following message was sent by the NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife to e-mail list subscribers. Press inquiries related to this message should be directed to the DEP Press Office at 609-984-1795.
Forest stewardship activities at two different sites on Sparta Mountain WMA will begin on or about February 14, 2018 and end prior to April 1, 2018, but may resume after November 15, 2018.
Approximately 18.5 acres in Stand 18 will be managed to restore young oak-hickory forest by opening the canopy to allow for the growth of young oak and hickory trees, blackberries, sedges, and a variety of other shrubs and sapling species, thus creating habitat for more than 60 different bird species, including the endangered Golden-winged Warbler.
Approximately 17 acres in Stand 33 will be managed to accelerate the development of old growth forest characteristics through a process known as "gap-phase replacement", which mimics the natural processes of an old-growth forest.
